Wednesday Encouragement.

I call Wednesdays my “lump days”. No, that’s not a misspelling. I know people refer to it as “hump day” but that just makes me think of camels. When I think of a lump, it’s pretty much how I usually feel. I’m halfway through the week, but there’s still SO much time before Friday, yet all of my energy is usually spent by now! All the drive I had on Sunday for the week seems to dissipate by now, (I blame Mondays).  I’m just a lump on my kitchen floor, grasping for a Diet Dr. Pepper to somehow infuse me with caffeine so I can just make it through the rest of the day.

So, I’d like to do a Wednesday Encouragement segment each week, (this MIGHT be more for myself…)! I’ve always prided myself on being an encouraging type of person, especially because I really hate to see people hurting or upset. I am empathetic to the 10th degree.

Today is gonna be about something I tend to struggle with a lot: CONFIDENCE. In myself and in my ability. When I talk to friends and family they always tell me, “Oh you shouldn’t talk like that, you are amazing!” Which I deeply appreciate, but I’ve always been super critical of myself. Plus it’s usually my mom who says that and she has to. It’s a daily problem as I admire the beautiful work of my fellow photographers and other professionals. Granted, I don’t want to be JUST like them or copy them in any way, but I just feel like my skill level just isn’t where I want it to be. Times like these I have to remember a Mary Marantz quote: “Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.”

Oh Mary, where would I be without your wonderful quotes?? And it’s true! I know a lot of people compare themselves to others who have been in the business MUCH longer! I do it all the time. I’ve only been doing photography intensely for about a year, so of course I’m not gonna be as good as people who’ve been in business for 3+ years! There’s just no way I can be where they are yet. How do I get there, though? I WORK for it! We can’t just sit here and hope and pray to get better. God isn’t just gonna drop experience into our laps, because we all know that’s not how God works.

The keys to improvement are these: HARD WORK and CONFIDENCE

Even if you’re terrified of a situation, like going to a client meeting with new people and you’re really awkward, (like me!), or you’re shooting in new conditions that you’re not so used to, you just gotta fake it until you make it. Stop letting that nasty little voice in the back of your head tell you that you’re going to fail! You’re the ONLY one standing in your way! Seriously, if I let that little voice control me, I don’t think I’d ever get out of bed.

I don’t want any of you to think that you can’t do something that you’re dreaming about. Want to start a bakery? Want to learn how parachute out of planes? Maybe you just want to learn to speak another language!

What’s stopping you?

Oh I’m not financially stable…Oh I’m not experienced enough…Oh I’m too busy.

Those are just excuses. If there are things you DREAM about doing, why aren’t you doing what you can to fulfill them?

Start saving…Get off your bum and get some experience…Re-evaluate your priorities.

Confidence. I have it in you, and I have to have it in myself before I can really accomplish anything.

So go out and dream it, do it, and LIVE IT.

Wishing you the happiness of pygmy owls and sugar gliders,

-M

Big Changes and Bigger Dreams.

So, first off, I adore Justin and Mary. I’ve followed them for a while, and they are just the best. When I heard about the What’s Next Tour I immediately looked up tickets for DC! Unfortunately at the time it just wouldn’t fit in the budget, but thanks to one of the SWEETEST girls ever, Amanda Hedgepeth, I finally got my golden ticket at the last minute!! (Yes I liken this to visiting to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory).

Okay-how do I explain my experience…let’s just call it LIFE CHANGING. Yeah I know that might sound a smidgen extreme, but when I went into the experience I was feeling really uninspired, lost and I was legitimately on the verge of giving up in this business. It was like Mary spoke directly to my heart, and her words lifted my spirit and I left feeling like I could conquer anything. How does she do that?? Plus I met so many amazing people. Big wigs of the industry, amazing up and comers, and just plain awesome creative types. The talent was overwhelming! Mary told us that we are part of the “BUT I…” Generation, where we just make up all these excuses not to pursue our dreams and grow. I realized that I am a culprit of making these excuses!

But I’m too young. But I don’t have enough experience. But I’m scared of what people will think.

We have to STOP thinking that way! Our silly little fear of failure is holding us back from the amazing and spectacular things we can do if we just go for it! You will fail, but that’s the POINT. Mary said, “Success rarely teaches us anything. Failure always does.” And it’s a truth that’s been proved over and over and over. You live, you learn, and you will succeed, but success isn’t just going to be handed to you. You have to FAIL FORWARD. Action trumps fear.

SO, we were then all challenged to intensely look at ourselves, our business, and our craft and decide: What’s Next? What’s your big next? What is that HUGE dream that you’ve been thinking about, but have been too scared to admit out loud? And so I’ve come to my announcement….

In 2013 I will begin the process of switching over to film photography!!

PHEW! I’m so glad I’ve gotten that out!! I’m so excited about it, and I’m so looking forward to going back to my roots and reviving what almost became a lost art. Be on the look out for updates on my progress:)

Now that you’ve heard my story, I have a challenge for you. I want you to dream of your big next, and I want you to TELL someone about it. If you don’t say it aloud, it’s going to to be easier for you to just forget it and not make it come true! SHOUT it if you have to. I want you to not be afraid to dream HUGE, fail, succeed, and keep pushing forward for what’s next.

The BEAUTIFUL Carina of Michael & Carina Photography who went with me on one crazy car ride;)

PS- made this to frame and hang on my office wall!!!

You’re so cute! And I always really love your black and whites:). Bummed I only saw you for like one second when I was talking to someone else:/..glad to see you enjoyed the conference as much as I did though!!

Friday Follow-up: Big Wigs&Gifts

Okay, so I went to this incredible conference in DC hosted by Justin & Mary, (who I cannot say enough about!) on Thursday. It opened my eyes and gave me some seriously intense things to think about, and I was challenged to really look at my business and my craft in a whole different light. I’m not going to get TOO much into it because I have a whole separate blog post on that, (and an ANNOUNCEMENT!). But it was too great not to mention. I especially loved meeting all of the big wigs of the industry; they were all so down to earth and modest and normal. Who would’ve believed that? They’re just PEOPLE right? We forget that!! I know I was starstruck for a bit! Being at this conference reminded me how much of a community we have, and I feel so lucky for it, my photog family is the BEST.

This week was full of more than just a conference though, so here’s a few events that occurred this week:

-There was FINALLY enough fog to get some cool shots. I love fog.

-My adorable dog masqueraded as E.T.

-I received prints from my amazing friend Jenni. Go check out her page ASAP!

-I got in my UMBA BOX. It included these completely adorable calendar coasters from Sugarcube Press!

-I FOUND BOOTS THAT FIT!!!

-I started decorating my new apartment!

-I photographed my friend Annika who’s a completely gorgeous ginger.

-IT SNOWED!!!!!!

HAPPY WEEKEND!

sparkles and smiles,

M

The Winter Angel

This is Part II of “The Four Seasons of Angels Project”, and I was lucky enough to snag Kaitlyn of Kait Winston Photography to be my fabulous star. Her, along with leading man Dylan personified the cozy, sensual side of Winter. In winter things die and leave the trees skeletal and fill us with a sense of emptiness. It’s so much more than that. Everything is not dead, it’s simply waiting. It’s gathering strength to prepare to burst forth in the spring. Winter means cold, snow, and bone-chilling nights; but it also means cozy fires, warm blankets, and dreaming of the blooms of Spring.

Catherine+Tyler: Engaged

It was a bit of a dreary day when Catherine, Tyler and I met for their engagement photos downtown, but thankfully overcast days aren’t the worst to work with! It was when it started misting, and then raining, and then really raining that we ran into a bit of trouble. Good thing they brought their football jerseys, so we had a little pick-up game, which resulted in the ball landing in the canal. No worries! Tyler the brave managed to fish it out and save the day! Enjoy part 1 of their engagement session!
