Fridays in Betty’s Closet- A Little Edge

It’s me again!
Goodness I feel like a celebrity or something getting asked to do these posts on Meagan’s blog. Her work is always so beautiful I feel so honored to be a part of these fun little posts!
This weeks outfit is actually somewhat of a simple one.
I realized though, as I sat down to do this week’s write up, that these are all pieces that I wear a lot. I guess they’re all sort of my statement /go-to/essential pieces if you will.

The shirt, similar to last weeks trench coat, I got in England at the famously wonderful Primark (seriously, if you’re ever over there, you have to go. It’s like the British version of Forever 21). I love this shirt. I probably wear it too much actually. But it’s just my favorite.
And I’m not 4 anymore so I can dress myself and wear it as much as I want and it’s ok. Right?

The skirt is one I thrifted, I believe from The Clothes Rack actually (which is one of my favorite thrift shops located on Cary Street for all you Richmonders!). This is the perfect black skirt. I can dress it up, I can dress it down, I can layer it with things, it’s great. I love it.

The jacket is yet another thrifted piece. I also wear this all the time. Except when I’m wearing jeans. Because, you know, this isn’t the 90′s you guys.
This jacket goes with everything though. At least I think it does. I’ve even worn it with super fancy dresses to give my outfit a little bit of edge and dress things down a bit. It’s perfectly worn in every way, just like a good jean jacket should be.

The belt used to be my Moms when she was my age and the bracelets are thrifted (except for the beaded bracelet, I made that!).
The bigger ring is Michael Kors and the smaller one is from Etsy!
As for the necklaces, I won’t try to distinguish from the masses but they’re a mixture of vintage, thrifted, heirlooms, Target and handmade by yours truly!
Sometimes just one isn’t enough, ya know?

And then of course last but not least the shoes!
I found these for a whopping $15 in a store called Rue 21. I walked in with a friend one day and there they were. It was pretty much meant to be. They make me feel like a modern day Dorothy.

So there you have it!
Oh, and for all of you who don’t know me… yes.
My glasses are real.
I know I’m silly sometimes but I don’t go around wearing fake glasses.
I’m just channeling my inner Buddy Holly.

You are too freaking adorable, Leney! I love this! Amazing photography, too!

Fridays in Betty’s Closet- Jackie-O

I know it seems a bit odd-what on earth is Betty’s closet?? Basically I – along with my fabulous guest blogger A Girl Named Leney - are starting a feature where we showcase our favorite outfits inspired by fashions from the era of the ever so fabulous Betty White! We’re both really into vintage, and Leney is the queen of vintage fashion. She’ll be talking about some of her favorite outfits and where she got her pieces-seriously her outfits are amazing!!! This week we had a Jackie O inspired look, and I’ll leave it to Leney to tell you more!

So Meagan asked me to talk about my outfit. I’m not really sure how to talk about it other than to say that I totally feel like a cross between Jackie O and Nancy Drew.
Or like I should be a spy in a James Bond movie.
Wearing a trench coat does that to you I guess.I got the trench coat when I was in England and it has become one of my favorite pieces. It pretty much matches everything and I always feel classy when I’m wearing it!The shoes I scored from Target for a ridiculous $6. Gotta love that place. The sunglasses are also from there actually!
They’re another favorite piece. The collared shirt is actually from the little boys section at a thrift store… Shhhh….
And the sweater clip (which I’ve put on my shirt collar instead. Yea, I’m a rebel) is something I’ve had for a while, I think it was my grandmothers, but I don’t actually remember. I’m also wearing a skirt that used to be my Aunt’s.My watch is by Michael Kors. I got it for my 20th Birthday and I’ve pretty much worn it every day since!

And before you ask where my socks are from, I have to tell you: I have no idea! I never remember where my socks or tights are from. Probably because I’ve had the same ones for so long…. Is that gross? I mean I wash them…

Anyway, I know girls say this a lot, but it really is true with me: I like to mix thrifted/vintage pieces, with new/modern ones. I especially love when things used to belong to various members of my familt. Like my Mom’s spoon ring or my Great Grandmother’s lace blouse or my Grandfather’s grey wool sweater.
I love the stories the things we own tell.
I love knowing that someone I love, or maybe someone I never even knew but I’ve heard stories about, once wore these things. That they traveled with them through life’s important, and unimportant moments.
These things have witnessed various generations going to prom, graduating from college, a first day of a new job or even the first day coming back from their honey moon and walking into their new home.
I like carrying around these stories with me when I wear these things, as silly as it may seem, it just feels right.
It makes me feel like I’m continuing their history.

Thrifting Finds

Okay so I’ve had this sinus infection for going on three days now-YUCK. I finally felt well enough today to get off my bum and take photos of my thrifting finds from last week! If you know me-you know I really like-no love-no am OBSESSED with thrifting!! Normally I end up at my local Goodwill which always seems to hold little gems that I always manage to find. The desk I’m working from, my mint green couch I’m obsessed with, and generally most of my furniture-Goodwill! Maybe it’s because I have a soft spot in my heart for upcycling, or maybe I just love a good deal, either way coming out of Goodwill with this much for so little is exhilarating!

LAMPS: 2 for $10

SWEATERS: 2 for $5

FRAME: $2.50

FUNKY LITTLE LAMP: $2.50

Total: $20!

On Being A Second Shooter

I love getting opportunities to work with fellow photogs as their second shooter. It’s so much fun getting to see how they shoot and interact with their clients, and then being able to see the resulting images. I was super pumped to help out Katie for this gorgeous Virginia Beach wedding at the Lesner Inn, even though it was about 10 degrees outside! Even still, we rocked it, and I felt like I almost lost a finger due to frostbite, brr.

Make sure you check out Katie’s beautiful work!!: www.katienesbittphotography.com

Here are a few photos from that day, mostly of Katie being awesome.

I don’t know if this is a racist comment, but I promise that is not the intention. Interracial couples are my favorite and I am unbelievably jealous that you, yourself got to be a second shooter of their moment.

Sonnie.

This weekend one of my amazingly talented friends Richard Jackson came down from Maryland to have what we called a “conceptual weekend”. Basically we laid out concepts for images, and then shot all of the images at once. It was by far one of the absolute best weekends I’ve had in a really long time. Getting together with all of my models, hair and makeup people was just an explosion of creativity, and I have never been so artistically rejuvenated! I was basically an art director and a go-fer to help Richard create his masterpieces. I did get a chance to take some natural light images for Sonnie, (WHO IS AMAZING BY THE WAY), which had a softer feel that some of the stuff she normally does. This girl is crazy talented, and so extremely versatile. It was AMAZING working with her!!

Enjoy her images:)

These photos are by far some of the best ones I have seen Sonnie take. The last one is my absolute favorite. This was a great team. Meagan you are incredibly talented!
